About the event

A Social Hour for those who love the environment and OKC! October features Sean Washington, the Fit Naturalist.

OKC Beautiful's Sustainability Social Hour is for those who love the environment and our city. Each session is centered around networking with those who have a passion for and want to learn more about environmental stewardship topics. Each session features a conversational Q&A with a guest speaker. The event includes a mix and mingle portion from 5:00- 5:30, then kicks off the one-hour Q&A session.

About Sean: "My name is Sean Washington (he/him) and I am a local bodybuilder, ecologist, and science communicator. Born and raised in Oklahoma City, I have always had a massive passion for ecology and more importantly communicating that with the public. When I was younger it was correcting kindergarten teachers on how butterflies move to creating a “Snapchat Daily Animal Facts” chain in high school through part of college. From the time I could work a remote, I watched National Geographic, Discovery Channel, and Animal Planet. When I could read, I emptied school libraries on any books about wildlife and ecosystems. And all of my weekends were requesting visits to the zoo.

I studied Wildlife Conservation Biology at Colorado State University where I realized something very important about science fields, they’re externally boring and unappealing. I fell in love with my communications classes and learned that the reason sciences looked so drab from the outside is because we don’t know (and aren’t expected to learn) how to communicate effectively. So from that realization onwards I made it a mission to create a bridge to fill that gap. I believe that science is amazing and we make tons of discoveries, but if the public can’t understand what it is, it can’t matter.

Speaking at clubs and camps, leading guided hikes, podcast, educational posts, shirts, mugs and stickers, and creating educational signage about some of our rare and endangered species. My goal is to raise awareness about our beautiful connected and living world, while encouraging the public to care more just by knowing more about it. It’s impossible to act if you don’t care, and you can’t care if you don’t know."

All ages are welcome! You do not have to be 21+ to attend.

Sustainability Social Hour is every second Wednesday of the month. Location changes each month. Visit www.okcbeautiful.com/sustainability-social-hour to learn more.
