About the event

OKC Beautiful's Sustainability Social Hour is for those who love the environment and our city. Each session is centered around networking with those who have a passion for and want to learn more about environmental stewardship topics.

Each session features a conversational Q&A with a guest speaker. April features Jared Wahkinney, Indigenous Communities Project Manager with the National Park Service's Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program. The event includes a mix and mingle portion from 5:00- 5:30, then kicks off the one-hour Q&A session.

Jared Wahkinney, a member of the Comanche Nation, is the Indigenous Communities Project Manager with the National Park Service's Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program. Raised in Lawton, Oklahoma, his journey  into the conservation field began with a transformative visit to a national park at the age of 24. Programs like Native Explorers and Mountains to Main Street continued this inspiration with examples of leadership and community values in outdoor spaces.

In 2021, Jared transitioned into permanent positions within the National Park Service, serving as a Public Dispatcher at Mount Rainier  National Park and Park Guide at the Oklahoma City National Memorial. Currently, as the Indigenous Communities Project Manager for RTCA, Jared now works to help communities and tribes meet their outdoor recreation and conservation goals that align with their  needs.

Outside of his professional life, Jared is a devoted husband and a father to two-leggeds and one four-legged children. He also showcases  his creative talents as a filmmaker and photographer. Jared Wahkinney envisions a future where Indigenous communities are actively invited to lead and participate in conservation and cultural preservation in space they have been historically excluded from,  shaping a more inclusive and sustainable world.

All ages are welcome! You do not have to be 21+ to attend.

Sustainability Social Hour is every second Wednesday of the month. Location changes each month. Visit www.okcbeautiful.com/sustainability-social-hour to learn more.
