About the event
OKC Beautiful's Sustainability Social Hour is for those who love the environment and our city. Each session is centered around networking with those who have a passion for and want to learn more about environmental stewardship topics.
Each session features a conversational Q&A with a guest speaker. January features Mark Walvoord of the University of Central Oklahoma Sustainability Center. The event includes a mix and mingle portion from 5:00- 5:30, then kicks off the one-hour Q&A session.
Mark Walvoord is a resident of Edmond with his wife and two daughters, where he never tires of reminding them to recycle, compost, and help him plant Oklahoma natives plants in their garden. Since earning his Master of Science degree in Zoology in 2002, he has worked for universities in Oklahoma and North Carolina – teaching biology, advising students, training faculty, publishing papers, and running tutoring programs. While currently working at the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO), he is also earning his doctoral degree in Learning Sciences at OU, studying how students’ ecological identities shift through transformative learning experiences. He serves on the board of directors of the Oklahoma Compost and Sustainability Association, Association for Biology Laboratory Education, and Partners for Madagascar and is a co-coordinator of UCO’s Sustainability Center. His campus sustainability work includes obtaining grant funding, a food recovery and compost program called Broncho Bites, relaunching a community garden, promotion of the campus native Pollinator Garden, and advising the Students for Sustainability club.
All ages are welcome! You do not have to be 21+ to attend.
